In theory, my partial misfortune may be due to the questionableness of my blackness as a nerd, but I want to undo the myths that cloud the desirability about blerds. Clay got the idea to organize an entire convention around contributions by black people to all aspects of nerdom after attending New York Comic Con panels that discussed diversity in the nerd community and workplace. So she started organizing what is shaping up to be the first Blerd City Con, which will take place over the course of two days and across five venues in Dumbo.
And I think Blerd City Con is a good example of that. In support of and inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement that spurred a global call for action, the first BLKVoices initiative, Educate An Ally, will prompt users to share their thoughts on how non-Black allies can help the Black community in the continued fight for racial equality and justice. With over 3 million downloads, BLK is committed to getting the voices of its users heard beyond familiar circles, extending its platform as a place to encourage education and dialogue with broader audiences around the topics of racism and discrimination.
